Sky News halted for ‘breaking’ announcement – and it’s huge blow for Keir Starmer

Sky News was interrupted for a “breaking” announcement – and it’s bad news for prime minister Keir Starmer. Saima Mohsin brought her broadcast to a halt as she announced that a record-breaking number of migrants arrived in the UK on Tuesday. The presenter said: “Some breaking news. We’ve just had the latest numbers of migrants and asylum seekers arriving on UK shores and it says that 705 migrants arrived yesterday. That is a record-breaking number so far this year.” Mohsin, 48, continued: “It comes on the day that the government confirmed that they are having discussions, as they put it, with the French government to explore options to increase returns to Europe.

“The government says that it is working hard to create a deal with France on the migrant crisis. That’s of course on the day that we’ve just got this breaking news that 705 people arrived yesterday and that’s a record number for this year.” The announcement comes just days after 656 migrants made the journey on Saturday, taking the overall total to nearly 9,000 in 2025. This figure has already surpassed the 6,265 migrants who crossed by this point last year. This is a devastating blow for the prime minister, who promised his Labour government would “smash the gangs” last year.

Back in November, the politician, 62, told the annual assembly of Interpol in Glasgow that it was his “personal mission to smash the people-smuggling gangs” as he announced an extra £75m to police the UK’s borders.

The prime minister’s comments were slammed on Tuesday’s GB News by Mike Jones, who claimed the gangs are the ones who are “smashing” Mr Starmer.

Speaking to presenter Martin Daubney, the political scientist and migration expert said: “You become desensitised to it after a while and many more records will be smashed during Labour’s time in office because the gangs are smashing Sir Keir Starmer rather than the other way around.”

He continued: “Keir Starmer has adopted a law and order approach. I’m not against that but the law and order approach is to detain and deport, not stop the boats, not smash the gangs, it’s detain and deport.

“But to do that, you need two things. First of all you need to reopen detention centres and number two, you need to amend or abolish the Human Rights Act. You need a legal architecture there that’s working with the Home Office, not against it.”

Issuing a scathing verdict on the prime minister’s words, Jones added: “But at this moment in time, the Home Office is like a potemkin institution, it has no real power. All of that power lies with the judges and human rights lawyers and Sir Keir Starmer can try as much as he wants to smash the gangs, but it’s not going to happen.”
