Prince William spent time watching his favourite football team, Aston Villa, claim a victorious match following a game against Celtic on Wednesday.
But while he was there, it seems he was subject to quite a lot of abuse.
Prince William has taken his son, Prince George, with him to matches in the past.
But when he attended the recent match alone, the mood was swiftly changed when Celtic fans decided to sing vile chants and hold up anti-royal banners at the prince.
Prince William at Aston Villa football match
Aston Villa beat Celtic 4-2 in the home game, which seems to have contributed to the fans’ vile reaction to Prince William’s attendance.
According to the Telegraph, the Prince of Wales was subject to the vile chants that made disgusting remarks about Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.
The chants included “Lizzie’s in a box” and “if you hate the royal family, clap your hands”.
However, it didn’t stop there. Some Celtic fans even held a banner in the stands. The banner praised an intruder who once found his way into the late queen’s bedroom, days after William’s birth.
While William couldn’t say anything about the remarks, he continued to enjoy Aston Villa’s win and was pictured cheering and celebrating.
But Aston Villa supporters appeared to have Prince William’s back throughout the night. Whenever Celtic fans sang their rude chants, Villa fans sang the national anthem in response.
Along with this, the national anthem was also heard on the streets of Birmingham, alongside flags supporting King Charles
Royal chants about Queen Elizabeth II spark outrage online
Not only were fans in the stadium appalled, but many supporters took to social media to express their disgust at the chants.
Speaking on X, one wrote: “I am appalled by the disgraceful behaviour of some Celtic fans at Villa Park. Singing vile chants about the late queen in front of Prince William is disrespectful and insensitive. We must remember our words have power and strive for respect in sports.”

Another added: “A fan of football is a fan of football. Doesn’t matter if he is a royal. Shocked by the chants directed to Prince William tonight.”
A third penned: “There were thick morons who subjected Prince William to chants of ‘If you hate the royal family clap your hands.’ And also ‘Lizzie is in a box,’ during their defeat against Aston Villa. Thousands taunting one man who can’t respond. Such nasty bullies.”
Prince William and George at the football
William has always been vocal about his love for football. From countless match appearances to speaking about his passion in interviews, William is a true football fan.
And over the years it seems his oldest son, Prince George, has been following in his footsteps. The father and son have regularly attended matches together, and are always photographed enjoying themselves.
Earlier this month Prince William took a trip to see Aston Villa supporters at a local pub. He had asked the football club to arrange the gathering just hours before Aston Villa took to the pitch.
William bought them all a drink, and bonded with them over their shared love for the football team.
