Four million UK passport holders face being turned away at airport

A staggering four million British passports are anticipated to expire this year, with a concerning 1 in 10 UK adults – including a quarter of under-25s – having missed holidays due to out-of-date travel documents. In an intriguing forecast, approximately 3 in 4 (72%) UK adults aim to book a getaway for 2025.

Co-op Insurance, drawing on data secured through the Freedom of Information Act, disclosed that over 4 million British passports will reach their expiry date in 2025. The insurer’s commissioned consumer study suggests that around three-quarters of Britons are looking to arrange vacations within the European Union and further afield for 2025, reports Birmingham Live.

Furthermore, about 1 in 10 (10.4%) confess they have previously missed a holiday because they didn’t renew their passports in time. Alarmingly, a substantial number of young people seem to be taking risks; 25% of those aged between 25 to 34 often jet off without securing travel insurance.

Meanwhile, nearly 3 in 10 (28%) youngsters from 16 to 24 years have encountered serious incidents or fallen ill while abroad, as opposed to a mere less than 1 in 10 (8%) of over-55s. To highlight the issue, Graham Ward Lush, Head of Travel at Co-op Insurance, has commented: “Keeping your passport up to date is a crucial step that many of us neglect, which could result in disappointment and financial loss should it mean that you are unable to travel abroad as planned.”

“Some countries require at least three to six months of validity remaining on your passport before travelling, and it can take up to three weeks (or sometimes more) to renew UK passports, so it is always best not to leave it too late. Those travelling abroad should also seek sufficient insurance cover to have peace of mind that they are protected from incidents that may result in high medical expenses or loss of possessions.”

“If you are unsure of your passport expiry date or the best insurance for you on your next trip, I advise you to look into your options without delay.”
