Since their relationship became public, Meghan Markle has been repeatedly compared to the late Princess Diana. A new book has revealed that Prince Harry hoped his family would see similarities between Meghan and his mother, but that didn’t happen.
In the book “Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors” by investigative journalist Tom Bower published earlier this year, many shocking revelations about the couple were revealed. One of them was that Prince Harry had hoped that Princess Diana’s sisters and close friends would recognize the similarities between Meghan Markle and his mother. However, that wish did not come true, leaving the prince feeling “disappointed”.
According to Bower, Earl Spencer – Princess Diana’s younger brother – was asked to speak to his nephew about his growing relationship with Meghan. The book adds that Earl Spencer, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Baroness Jane Fellowes and Diana’s close friend Julia Samuel all failed to notice any similarities between Meghan and the late princess.
They even suggested that Meghan might have trouble fitting in with the British Royal Family. “Since the Vanity Fair article that cast doubt on Meghan, the actress has found that her Kensington Palace neighbors are even less sympathetic to her,” Bower wrote.
He continued: “At that time, Harry introduced Meghan to Diana’s two sisters, Jane and Sarah, and her best friend, Julia Samuel. Harry assumed that Diana’s family and friends would see similarities between Diana and his future wife. Both, he said, had similar problems. He was disappointed. No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend. More frustrating for him was that they thought Meghan would not be suitable for the Royal Family.”
The author added: “Their insecurities were voiced by Charles Spencer, Diana’s younger brother. At William’s request, Earl Spencer intervened. Three times married, Earl Spencer advised his nephew to reconsider his haste to marry. His advice provoked a fierce reaction. ‘This is going to be really difficult,’ Harry later mused about establishing Meghan’s place in the family.”
Bower also touched on Prince Harry’s financial concerns: “One of his constant worries was not having enough money if they got married. Although Harry receives around £1.5m a year from King Charles, Meghan was advised to continue acting to supplement their income. At the time, Meghan knew from her agent Nick Collins that her acting prospects were limited. Omid Scobie, her official biographer, summed up her Hollywood exit perfectly. ‘She wanted a more meaningful career,’ he wrote. ‘She could do more with her platform. Her frustrations were still there. She was so close to having her future in order, but nothing was official yet .’
