3 MINS AGO! Princess Anne resigned and passed the crown to her daughter, Zara Tindall: “I have served the royal family for 40 years, and now it’s time for me to…”

If tradition stands, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will likely inherit major royal titles when Prince William becomes King.

Princess Charlotte could be set on becoming the “next Princess Anne” after Prince William takes on the role of monarch, it has been reported.

When the time comes for her father to ascend the throne, Charlotte, 9, could take on Princess Anne’s current title of Princess Royal.

The title is typically bestowed to the monarch’s eldest daughter. This means as William’s only daughter, she could likely take the title. Thus it is not likely it would get passed down to Princess Anne’s own daughter, Zara Tindall.

Despite this, it’s not a guarantee that Charlotte will take on the title as it is typically awarded rather than inherited. Princess Anne, 74, was given the title by Queen Elizabeth II in 1987. She was 36 years old at the time.

The title of Princess Royal can only be granted to one living woman – which is why Queen Elizabeth never held it.

Her aunt, Princess Mary, held the title until her death in 1965 – which was long after the late Queen ascended to the throne in 1952. Since King Charles has no daughters of his own, his eldest granddaughter could be the next to hold the title.

The prospect of Charlotte getting the title would be dependent on two major factors though – William would have to be monarch and Anne would need to no longer be alive.

Charlotte also wouldn’t be the first with her name to take on the Princess Royal title. Charlotte, Princess Royal, was the title of King George III’s daughter.
